Abstract
In the last two decades we have witnessed two main trends in the field of party law. Firstly, a growing number of states have enacted laws in order to regulate the organization and functioning of political parties. Secondly, this new legislation regulates party activities more extensively, encompassing more elements and regulating more in detail party organizational life. Although these trends involve both established and new (or restored) Latin American democracies, it is in the latter where these processes appear to be particularly sharp. Now, even when these trends have raised interest both in Law and Political Science academic fields, our knowledge on the causes associated to different types of party regulation in the region is still precarious; we also know little about the processes which lead to the include – or reform – party laws in Latin America and even less on the real consequences of the implemented reforms over the functioning of party systems and the quality of democratic regimes. Consequently, this project aims to contribute to fill this gap. With that goal, it will try to identify and systematize the patterns of party regulation in Latin America, comparing the relationship between the type of party regulation and the main features of every democratic regime. At the same time, the project will try to assess the real impact of these reforms over each party system and political regime. In this regard, we are particularly interested in studying the political context which leads to political reforms, the processes of political reforms themselves, and their effects from a comparative perspective.
