About the courses: "Intermediate Law Skills"

The purpose of our courses is to introduce students to the grammar, structures and vocabulary that are typical of the language of the law. It is ideal for those students who have attended courses in this Department or other language centres and need to read and understand texts drafted in legal English. It is therefore not our purpose to train students to become professionals or experts in the Common Law but to consolidate their level of command of the language through the practice of the basic concepts delivered in the courses. The teaching material to be used and the methodology applied to the work in class will help with the transition between a traditional course and one of the characteristics described herein. The bibliography includes textbooks from the country whose legal system the courses are based on; and together with the bibliography there are sets of exercises specially prepared on the texts. The courses focus on reading comprehension, the identification of structures, vocabulary and usage of the language of the law and basic written production. Students will be tested throughout the course by means of the exercises given to them in class. There will also be a final written test similar in format to the exercises the students are familiar with.

Acerca del curso: "Inglés Jurídico - Elemental" <Curso Introductorio>

                                "Intermediate Law Skills" <Introductory Module>

To the student:

This course is devised for students who have a good level of command of the English language and want to take their first steps in other areas of specialised English. Since the language of the law is different from everyday English, students need to start the transition between reading and understanding various types of texts and getting to know the background of this particular area of the language. Consequently, this course is ideal as a first, introductory course in legal English.

Students are going to read material from various sources of information and are going to learn how the language of the law operates by a process of incorporating the new vocabulary and structures typical of the subject they are reading about, which should not be confused with studying the subject in detail. The sources include articles taken from magazines and newspapers as well as relevant literature from coursebooks.

The syllabus for this course is different. First, it is flexible. You will notice that there are not many sub-topics included in the units. The reason for this is that the teacher has the possibility to select the areas of interest for the students as the course is in progress from the feedback he gets from the group. Second, it is multi-purpose. Students have the chance to know the language of the law through an appropriate introduction plus both the vocabulary and relevant structures typical of this field.
