This paper approaches the most important studies concerning impeachment processes in different
countries of Latin America. Constitutional Impeachment is created as one of the pillars of the
republican system and its institutionalization can be considered contemporary with democratic
regime. Despite its oldness, the implementation of the impeachment of presidents has been a rare
practice. Nevertheless, in the last twenty years there was an interesting turn in this dynamic,
especially in Latin America, where there were repeated instances of presidential removal. This
recent turn in regional politics poses a challenge to political theory, as it displays an unusual
aspect of the democratic system, for which there is relatively little literature. Even tough this
work is not a full exhaustive review it attempts to contribute to the systematization of the major
recent studies on the subject. |
